In 1873 when the first Cable Car ride began in San Francisco, a half-successful attempt at rolling out the Tram in Calcutta (now Kolkata) was undertaken. In 1937 when the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in San Francisco, construction of the Howrah Bridge began in Calcutta.
What drives me to make these unnoticed comparisons? The Cable Car-Tram comparison is now famous after finding mention in Bollywood movie My Name is Khan! But for me linkages run deeper. Kolkata is my original home, SF is the adopted one. Probably, I carry revolutionary Bengal and liberal California in my heart and thoughts; a scintillating combination that I cherish.
I would love to be mistaken for a sociologist but my disciplinary rooting is more in International Relations. Though my research training and experience allows me to write more frequently about India’s foreign and strategic policy, this blog is a space for voicing my views on myriad issues. This is thetrajectory of my ideas and thoughts. Hope you’ll enjoy the posts and join the conversation.
