The Curious Case of Indian Elections
“It will be my endeavour to seek on a regular basis the guidance of spiritual leaders of all denominations on major challenges and issues facing the nation. For this, we shall evolve a suitable consultative mechanism.”
Any guesses on whose words are these?
It’s BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani! This is one of the promises to be realized if he is elected India’s next Prime Minister.
The above commitment appears in a letter dispatched by Advani to hundreds of religious leaders from all major faiths. The recipients include Baba Ramdev, Shri Shri Ravi Shankar, Maulana Wahiuddin. The declared intent is to clarify the misperception that secularism is anti-religion or religion neutral; it would an attempt to realize Sarva Panth Samaadar (equal respect for all faiths) in India.
I have few concerns regarding Advani’s proposals:
1. Does Advani realize that anti-religion and religion neutral are different concepts? India’s secular philosophy is based on equi-distance of state apparatus from all religious faiths rather than opposition to any.
2. The proposal of official consultation with religious bodies contradicts with the Constitution’s basic philosophy of secularism. Is Advani seeking a constitutional amendment to actualize his grand religious council?
3. Though Advani proposes to involve all religious groups, how will his Government deal with counter-currents within the consultative body? Shia and Sunni Muslims, liberal and conservative Hindus, Dravidian and North Indian Christians could propose contradictory demands. Is Advani planning a mini-religious legislature for India?
4. Is this merely an attempt to garner support of the non-Hindu electorate or does Advani really aspire to create such a body?
5. As a matter of curiosity, will the Shri Ram Sena, responsible for beating young women in a Mangalore pub also be included in the proposed body? How will Ram Sena’s exclusion be justified?
Even though Advani has attempted to project his and BJP’s secular credentials through the proposal, its conceptual roots are derived from the Sangh Parivar’s ideological thinking. The Dharma Raksha Manch, a VHP backed body has a similar charter of demands. Advani’s letter refers to the issues of cow protection, Ram Setu, River Ganga in a tone similar to the wider Hindutava philosophy of the Sangh Parivar.
Is the centric and left-wing electorate, like me biased against the BJP or is the BJP really incapable of genuinely adopting a secular outlook?
