Honrable Jeffrey J. Lunstead, in his Statement clarified that despite the current offensive, the LTTE would retain their capability to conduct guerrilla operations. According to him, the recent strategic gains by the Sri Lankan Government would have to be complimented with a genuine process of political reconciliation for sustainable peace on the Island. He referred to the grievances of the Sri Lankan Tamils as legitimate and emphasized on greater devolution of political authority. He pleaded for making development assistance to Sri Lanka contingent upon the Government’s performance on political reconciliation.
Dr. Anna Neistat, Senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, elaborated on the grave violation of human rights by the Sri Lankan Government. According to her if the LTTE were guilty of using the civilians as ‘human shields’, the Government was responsible for indiscriminate bombardment of designated ‘safe havens’. Independent public coverage of the military operation is strictly controlled by the Government rendering assessment of the ground realities difficult.
Mr. Robert Dietz, representing the Committee to Protect Journalists, highlighted the violation of press freedoms and constant attacks on journalists. Since the Government authorities were prime suspects in most attacks, no credible investigations were being conducted the assassinations of journalists.
The Senate Committee Hearing would not only serve to guide the U.S. policy vis-à-vis Sri Lanka, but would also ensure closer international scrutiny of the Sri Lankan Governments future policies.

Very nice blog. Good going Madhavi.
this hearing is a farce… sri lankan govt isnt going to stop now… finally they will have control of whole of north srinlanka after few decades… they dont want to talk now…they want to finish this thing… they say civilians have been warned to get out… if you stay behind we cant gurantee anything… LTTE is holding teh civiliian back coz they provide tehm with cover…
Civil war in lanka is on for last 25+ years, casualties over this period is over 65000 from both sides including civilians.
I am not against human rights and UN crying over civilian deaths but it is not a strong argument to ask Sri Lanka govt to stop the clean up. The process is on for last 2 years and no body was crying out loud till last few months…apparently it is Tigers (LTTE) who are doing this.
Do not forget LTTE is (or should i say was) the only terrorist organization in the world that has it’s own air force and naval command. I am pretty sure they have their links in Norway and other European countries.
Since LTTE is on the verge of getting wiped out (not to mention the Tamil support they have lost) it is their strategy to use civilians as human shield and then through it’s European support raise the issue at UN and other international forums…they should be called Pussies rather than Tigers.
It’s time SL govt take them out once and for all and what a better time when even the minorities Tamils are unhappy with LTTE.
